Understand the Pilates “Powerhouse”

Before trying to master complicated Pilates exercises, spend time understanding the area that supports and controls so many of them: the Powerhouse.

What Is the Pilates Powerhouse?

In traditional Pilates teaching, the term Powerhouse is used to describe the central region of the body that helps provide stability, support, and control during movement.

It is often associated with the abdominal area, pelvis, lower back, hips, and gluteal muscles.

Rather than thinking of the core as only the visible abdominal muscles, it is more useful to think about a group of muscles working together to organize the trunk and pelvis while the rest of the body moves.

The Powerhouse Is More Than Your Abs

Many beginners hear the word “core” and immediately think about the six-pack muscles. But Pilates takes a broader approach.

Abdominals Help support and control the trunk.
Pelvic Region Helps organize and stabilize the pelvis.
Lower Back Works with the abdominal region to support the spine.
Pelvic Floor Contributes to deeper trunk and pelvic support.
Glutes Help control the pelvis and movement of the hips.
Deep Stabilizers Help maintain efficient alignment during movement.
The Powerhouse is not one muscle. It is a coordinated system.

1. The Abdominal Muscles

The abdominal muscles play an important role in trunk movement and stability.

Instead of thinking about “tightening your abs” as hard as possible, Pilates encourages you to learn how different abdominal muscles contribute to movement and control.

Important abdominal muscles include:

  • Rectus abdominis: contributes to flexion of the trunk.
  • Internal and external obliques: contribute to rotation, side bending, and trunk control.
  • Transversus abdominis: a deeper abdominal muscle that contributes to abdominal wall and trunk support.

These muscles don't normally work completely independently. During movement, they coordinate with muscles around the spine, pelvis, hips, and respiratory system.

Study Tip:
Don't memorize the abdominals only by name. Learn what each muscle generally contributes to and then observe how multiple muscles work together during Pilates exercises.

2. The Pelvis and Pelvic Region

The position and control of the pelvis are important in many Pilates exercises.

During some movements, the pelvis may remain relatively stable while the legs move. During others, the pelvis itself may move as part of the exercise.

Learning to recognize the difference is an important part of Pilates training.

Ask yourself:

  • Should my pelvis remain stable during this movement?
  • Is pelvic movement intentionally part of the exercise?
  • Am I moving from the hips or compensating through the pelvis?
  • Is the movement appropriate for my current range of motion?
Stability does not mean rigidity.
The goal is organized movement, not unnecessary tension.

3. The Pelvic Floor

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles located at the base of the pelvis. These muscles contribute to pelvic support and work in coordination with other muscles involved in trunk stabilization and breathing.

In Pilates education, the pelvic floor may be discussed as part of deeper core organization.

However, more effort is not automatically better. The pelvic floor needs the ability to contract, coordinate, and relax appropriately.

Important:
The goal should not be to constantly squeeze or hold the pelvic floor. Efficient movement depends on appropriate coordination rather than permanent tension.

4. The Lower Back and Spinal Stabilizers

Your back muscles are also part of the conversation when understanding the Powerhouse.

The spine is supported by multiple muscle groups that help maintain posture, control movement, and respond to forces created by the arms and legs.

This is why “core work” should not be understood as simply doing abdominal exercises.

During Pilates, consider:

  • Is the spine in the intended position?
  • Am I maintaining control without excessive tension?
  • Is my lower back compensating for movement somewhere else?
  • Can I maintain spinal organization as my limbs move?

5. The Glutes and Hips

The gluteal muscles and other muscles surrounding the hips play an important role in movement of the legs and control of the pelvis.

The gluteal group includes:

  • Gluteus maximus
  • Gluteus medius
  • Gluteus minimus

These muscles contribute to different hip movements and help support pelvic control.

For example, during standing or single-leg exercises, muscles around the hip may help prevent unwanted movement of the pelvis.

Think beyond “squeeze your glutes.”
Instead, learn what movement you are performing and which muscles need to contribute to it.

How the Powerhouse Muscles Work Together

The most important lesson is that these areas do not operate independently.

This distinction is especially important when learning Pilates.

Reformer footwork may appear to be primarily a leg exercise, but it provides a useful example of how the Powerhouse supports movement.

The legs may be producing much of the visible movement, but the central region of the body helps provide the foundation from which that movement occurs.

Example: Powerhouse Control During Leg Circles

Imagine performing a leg circle while lying on your back.

The goal is not simply to make the biggest circle possible.

Instead, consider what happens to the rest of your body as the leg moves.

Ask Yourself:

  • Can I move the leg without excessive movement of my pelvis?
  • Am I maintaining the intended spinal position?
  • Can I breathe naturally?
  • Am I controlling the movement rather than using momentum?
  • Is my range of motion appropriate for my control?

This demonstrates an important Pilates concept:

The goal is not always the largest movement. The goal is controlled movement.

How the Powerhouse Connects to the Six Pilates Principles

Understanding the Powerhouse also makes the six Pilates principles easier to understand.

A Better Way to Study the Powerhouse

Don't try to memorize every muscle at once. Start by understanding the relationships between different parts of the body.

  1. Identify the movement: What part of the body is moving?
  2. Identify the stable area: What should remain relatively organized?
  3. Observe the pelvis: Is it meant to remain stable or move?
  4. Observe the spine: What position is the exercise asking you to maintain?
  5. Consider the abdominals: How are they contributing to trunk control?
  6. Consider the hips and glutes: How are they contributing to movement or stability?
  7. Check your breathing: Can you breathe while maintaining control?
  8. Look for compensation: Is another part of the body moving because control has been lost?

Common Misunderstandings About the Powerhouse

“My pelvis should never move.” Some exercises require pelvic stability, while others intentionally include pelvic movement.
“Core strength means doing more crunches.” Core function also involves stabilization, coordination, breathing, and control.

Why Understanding the Powerhouse Makes Pilates Easier to Learn

Once you understand the Powerhouse, many Pilates instructions begin to make more sense.

You stop thinking only about individual body parts and start asking:

  • Where should this movement begin?
  • What should remain stable?
  • What muscles are helping support me?
  • Am I moving with control?
  • Am I compensating somewhere else?

This makes it easier to understand exercises instead of simply memorizing them.

Powerhouse → Stability → Control → Precision → Better Movement
