Don't Just Memorize Pilates Exercises—Understand Them
Learning Pilates is easier when you understand what an exercise is doing instead of simply memorizing its name, shape, or sequence.
Move Beyond Memorization
When studying Pilates, it can be tempting to create a long list of exercises and try to remember exactly what each one looks like.
But memorizing the appearance of an exercise is only the beginning.
To really understand Pilates, you should be able to look at an exercise and explain:
- What position the body is in
- What movement is happening
- Which muscles are contributing
- What needs to remain controlled or stable
- What the exercise is designed to develop
- Approximately how challenging the exercise is
When you study this way, exercises become connected to the anatomy and Pilates principles you already know.
Ask These 5 Questions for Every Exercise
1. What Position Am I In?
Start by identifying the body's starting position.
This immediately gives you useful information about the exercise and how gravity may affect the body.
Common Pilates positions include:

You do not need to identify every single muscle that is active during an exercise.
Instead, begin with the major muscle groups contributing to the movement and stability.
For example, you might recognize involvement from:
- Abdominals
- Obliques
- Hip flexors
- Glutes
- Hamstrings
- Quadriceps
- Hip abductors and adductors
- Spinal extensors
- Back and shoulder muscles
Also remember that there is a difference between muscles that are creating movement and muscles that are helping stabilize or control the body.
3. What Movement Is Happening?
Next, describe the exercise using basic movement terminology.
Ask what is happening at the major joints and through the spine.

Many Pilates exercises involve several movements at the same time.
Try to say: “The hips are extending while the knees are extending.”
That is a much stronger way to understand movement.
4. What Is the Purpose of the Exercise?
Every exercise should have a reason for being included in a Pilates session.
An exercise might be used to develop:
- Core control
- Spinal mobility
- Spinal extension
- Hip mobility
- Lower-body strength
- Upper-body strength
- Balance
- Coordination
- Postural awareness
- Control and stability
- Whole-body integration
Sometimes an exercise develops several of these qualities at once.
Also ask, “Why am I performing it?”
5. Is the Exercise Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced?
Understanding an exercise also means understanding its approximate level of difficulty.
However, exercise levels are not completely universal. Different Pilates schools, certification programs, and instructors may classify exercises differently.
It is more useful to consider why an exercise becomes more difficult.

Example: Understanding the Swan
The Swan family of Pilates exercises provides a good example of why understanding is more useful than memorization.
You could simply memorize what the movement looks like, or you could break it down.

A basic Swan and a full Swan Dive are not identical exercises. Swan Dive is a more dynamic and advanced variation that adds greater whole-body control and momentum management.
Example: Understanding Swan Dive
Instead of remembering Swan Dive as simply “the rocking back-extension exercise,” analyze what the body is doing.
Swan Dive Movement Analysis
Starting position: Prone.
Primary movement: Spinal extension with coordinated movement through the hips and whole body.
Important muscle groups: Spinal extensors, gluteal muscles, hamstrings, shoulder stabilizers, and other posterior-chain muscles.
Control requirement: The body must maintain organized extension while controlling the rocking movement rather than collapsing into the lower back.
Purpose: Develop posterior-chain strength, spinal extension control, coordination, and whole-body integration.
Level: Generally considered an advanced Pilates exercise or advanced variation.
Understand the extension, muscle contribution, stability, control, and purpose behind the shape.
Example: Understanding Reformer Footwork
Footwork may look simple, but it contains many important Pilates concepts.

Learn to Identify What Moves and What Stays Stable
One of the most useful skills in Pilates education is identifying the relationship between mobility and stability.
In many exercises, one area moves while another area needs to remain relatively controlled.

- Movement: What happens at the spine, hips, knees, shoulders, or other joints?
- Major Muscles: What major muscles create or control the movement?
- Stability: What should remain relatively stable?
- Purpose: What is the exercise designed to improve?
- Pilates Principles: Where do breathing, centering, concentration, control, precision, and flow appear?
- Difficulty: Beginner, intermediate, or advanced?
- Common Mistakes: What compensations might occur?
- Modification: Is there an easier or more supported version?
This method helps you build a mental map of each exercise instead of trying to memorize disconnected information.
Why This Helps With Pilates Certification Study
Certification questions often become easier when you understand the movement rather than searching your memory for an isolated fact.
For example, suppose a question describes an exercise involving:
- A prone starting position
- Lifting the upper trunk
- Spinal extension
- Activation of the posterior muscles
If you understand anatomy and movement terminology, you can reason through the question even if the wording is unfamiliar.
Memorization only gives you something to recall.
Don't Memorize Difficulty Levels Without Understanding Why
Rather than only memorizing that one exercise is “beginner” and another is “advanced,” ask what makes the advanced exercise more demanding.
It may require:
- More strength
- Greater spinal mobility
- Better balance
- More coordination
- Greater body awareness
- A smaller base of support
- More control against resistance
- More complex transitions
