Study Basic Anatomy and Movement Terminology for Pilates
You do not need to become an anatomy professor before learning Pilates, but understanding basic anatomy and movement terminology can make exercises, instructor cues, and certification study much easier to understand.
Why Anatomy Matters in Pilates
Pilates is movement education. When you understand the language used to describe movement, you can better understand what an exercise is asking the body to do.
Terms such as flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, rotation, prone, and supine appear frequently in exercise instruction and Pilates education.
You should also become familiar with the major muscle groups involved in common Pilates movements, including the abdominals, obliques, glutes, hamstrings, hip flexors, hip extensors, and spinal extensors.
The goal is not simply to memorize definitions. The goal is to be able to look at a movement and identify what is happening.
Start With These Basic Movement Terms
1. Flexion vs. Extension
Flexion generally describes a movement that decreases the angle between two body segments.
Extension generally describes movement in the opposite direction, increasing the angle or returning from flexion toward a more extended position.

Bringing the leg back toward the body's midline involves hip adduction.

Examples of muscles involved in hip flexion include the iliopsoas and other muscles that assist with bringing the leg forward.
Hip Extensors
Hip extensors help move the thigh backward relative to the pelvis.
The gluteus maximus and hamstrings contribute significantly to hip extension.

Glutes
The gluteal muscles contribute to several important hip movements and help support pelvic control.
- Gluteus maximus: strongly associated with hip extension
- Gluteus medius: contributes significantly to hip abduction and pelvic control
- Gluteus minimus: also contributes to hip movement and stability
These muscles are especially important during bridges, standing exercises, side-lying work, lunges, and many reformer movements.
9. Spinal Extensors
The spinal extensors include muscles along the back of the spine that help support posture, stabilize the spine, and contribute to spinal extension.
They become particularly important during exercises where the trunk lifts or extends against gravity.
During spinal extension, ask:
- Where is the movement coming from?
- Is the movement distributed appropriately through the spine?
- Are the shoulders unnecessarily tense?
- Am I using control rather than momentum?
- Can I maintain comfortable breathing?
As with all Pilates movements, greater range is not automatically better. The movement should be appropriate for the individual.
How Anatomy Helps You Understand Pilates Exercises
Once you understand basic terminology, you can break exercises into smaller pieces instead of memorizing them as isolated movements.
For example, imagine an exercise that asks you to straighten your knees while pushing the reformer carriage away.
